+1 to Greg's comment above, good points. Dissassembling and reassembling will teach you quite a lot about an instrument. I usually play during the later hours of the night so don't want to make any noise. I plug into a mixer and audio interface connected to a PC (use an audio player on PC). Can play at any volume with no noise, all audio through the cans.

Pete, is the reason they want to convert it to passive because of the battery issues? I helped a friend sort out the same issue on one of those basses a while back. I don't the details on hand but there should be fixes for this out there.
