Re: FS: 1990 Warwick Thumb NT 4 String

Nice Bass! And it does absolutely nothing. Baseball bat neck, 4 strings only, heavy, despite 34" scale quite hard to play in the money region. It's funny; I've gone the other way. :hmm I've got a Corvette $$ Fretless here that I really wasn't 100% sure about when I first got it (for very ...

Re: FS: 1990 Warwick Thumb NT 4 String

You crack me up, guys. Sorry to hear about your back issues, Ivan. Probably playing basses that are too heavy ;) . No, totally serious about this one this time. I meant what I wrote so definitely on the market. And Blaine, I appreciate your offer but can’t accept it. I’ll do it myself (nothing I enj...

Informal Sydney Mini-GTG

Hi all, I’ve nearly finished a commission build that is going to Sydney (the other one, well, search for Kermit Reject ;) ) and instead of boxing it up and shipping it at great cost I thought I’d take the opportunity to do a personal delivery. That would also give me an opportunity to bring my other...

FS: 1990 Warwick Thumb NT 4 String

So it is with a heavy heart ... . Actually, no - not at all. Every day when I come home I see this on the wall of my study: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94660385@N02/41606458950/in/dateposted-public/ And it does absolutely nothing. Baseball bat neck, 4 strings only, heavy, despite 34" scale quite h...

Re: Future Builds - Kinda Not Random

Actuation? No, Blaine, no. OK, a little workshop time today. Good to catch up with Blaine and get things done quickly since the workshop filled up very quickly. And hey, Drew is back for a quick build :D . Unfortunately no progress on the Special Q - David's been too busy with preparations for the S...

Re: TO ALL WORKING BASSISTS

Thats EXACTLY why I haven't been a "working" bassist for many years now Daniel. In 1984 I had a residency with a band and was paid $60 per night plus full on 3 course meal. The median house price in Melbourne was $65,000. In 2018, the median house price in Melbourne is over $900,000. So doing the m...

Re: Build #3, 4, 5 ...

I am generally happy with a surface straight out of the drum sander, maybe a couple of strokes with 120 grit. As Blaine said if it’s too smooth the glue doesn’t have anywhere to “bite”, in fact too smooth a surface can mean that you squeeze out most of the glue when clamping (glue-deprived joint). R...

Re: are nut slot hieights misunderstood?

Big fan of zero frets although there are different schools here as well: some say the zero fret should be the same height as all the others (which makes perfect sense to me), others prefer to have the zero fret a little meatier and higher. I just set up my fretless as well, and the ebony nut on that...

Re: Future Builds - Kinda Not Random

Prefer the normal flat space between the pickups? Or are you more the ramp type? Well, now you can have both: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94660385@N02/42552822104/in/dateposted-public/ or https://www.flickr.com/photos/94660385@N02/29401515618/in/dateposted-public/ OK, it sort of works. Not exactly...

Re: Future Builds - Kinda Not Random

Well, there's prior art with acoustics, but they're quite a differnet ballpark to a bass neck. https://www.accoya.com/news-events/news/accoya-tunes-up-in-the-uk/ B> Yep, been used before. Will definitely work for the body (might even be too light), and I don’t see why a 5-piece laminate neck wouldn...

Re: Future Builds - Kinda Not Random

That Q is looking great. What's the processed timber? Turned out real nice - can't wait to hear what it sounds like. The timber is Accoya which is acetylated radiate pine. It is fairly light (very light, actually) and (according to the blurb on the accoya.com web site) is very stable (both in terms...
