Re: Sneaky's random builds log

Same - right now I'm not the best when it comes to making decisions.

Alternative suggestion: how about a 4 string "shorter scale" multi scale bass, say 33-30" (or shorter, e.g. 30-27)? I think that would work aesthetically ... .

Michael

Re: Future Builds - Maybe Random

Quick comparison of the "original" Manta (which already was a modification of a different design) on the right, and the latest iteration on the left. Two main differences: much smaller lower horn (looking at it now I feel that it could point down a little more) and the considerably shorter headstock...

Re: Future Builds - Maybe Random

Just came back from the workshop (chopped off 18 mm of the end of the headstock, soooo much better in terms of proportion plus less weight plus shorter bass, and frets in but that's a whole different story ;) ) and David had a very radical suggestion. I'll stew on it for a while (still waiting for t...

I actually ended up with something similar using some software. This is not what it would look like though.

Re: Future Builds - Maybe Random

Thanks, Ivan and Nick, I am eternally grateful for your consistent advice ;) . It's a prototype. Yes, I'll be playing it but it is supposed to help me find out what works and what doesn't, and maybe be "out there" - why not. Compromise thought: I'll just do the bit from the last fret to the end of t...

Re: Build #12 - 6 string fretless (warning; crazy content)

Interesting observations there, Pete - a case FOR spraying I suppose since you don't wipe off anything. I've had similar experiences with the Oslo stuff I'm using. Both the padauk which naturally has pigments causing the red/orange colour) and the dyed ash left the rags red and blue, respectively, e...

Re: Future Builds - Maybe Random

Come to think of it, I think a blue fretboard would look good on this bass. It would have to match the blue bits I can see on the body though. Hmmm. It's not going to match, the northern ash and the maple "develop" the colour quite differently - see samples earlier in this thread. Regards...

How about some photoshop work to mock up a blue fretboard and compare side by side. Coukd be interesting......would definitely look less conventional.
Less conventional is good - I take that as a yes from Ivan.

Don't have PS so it's either do or don't ... .

Re: Future Builds - Maybe Random

Bit of a mock-up. Everything fits snug, electronics comp is just big enough. Headstock will lose about 20 mm in length, another design fine-tuning effort (always felt it was too long). Still not really sure about a blue fretboard ... . https://www.flickr.com/photos/94660385@N02/38468235340/in/datepo...

Re: Future Builds - Maybe Random

Lots of holes: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94660385@N02/28434327309/in/dateposted-public/ Unfortunately the push-in threaded inserts won't ship until early March so if I'm finished with everything else before then I'll simply have to wait. Bad organisational process at my end. Lots more holes else...

Make sure everything you order is in stock, or else it may take awhile to be sent out :)
No idea about the EB strings but will find out.

And yes, I know how Jason works ... ;) .

More clean-out. An old analogue Korg tuner, had velcro dots on it. Works fine, from memory even with a low B (using the harmonic).
