Re: Power Tube issue on YBA200?

With the amp off and cooled down, you could see if you have 2 preamp tubes of the same type, then swap them temporarily. It will indicate further if its the valve only, valve and spring, or spring only.
If it is a valve, it should be easy enough to get one off ebay?

Re: What do you use to record snares?

I can say that mics all pointing in the same direction will help a minimal mic method - it avoids certain phase cancellations for spill-pickup from one mic to the next - but then you also get a different kind of sound if you are picking up the desired target not exactly on axis. Experimentation.

Audix i5 often used as alternative: http://recordinghacks.com/frequency-graphs.php/0960 http://www.audixusa.com/docs_12/units/i5.shtml Others are Sennheiser e609, Audix D1 (if you can find one) or D2 or D4 and more: https://www.gearslutz.com/board/best-studio-gear/1123639-ten-best-mics-recording-sna...

Re: I desperately need help with technique and don't know where to begin

Other things possibly not mentioned: Do you play just the one bass? Is it set up ok? (ie does another bass feel/play differently?) I find I have to do a bit of work on any new bass to get the strings to respond evenly - think heights/angles of pickups/pole-pieces. I used to hate how the G would alwa...

Re: New hum from pedal board..

You would need to identify the sound a bit better. If it is an unrelenting buzzzzzzz then its most likely mains, and would likely disappear with being battery-powered as a test. Same as others say - and look for bad or loose sockets. Any particular 2 pedals stop the buzz? In other words is it any on...

Stripping a stained body

I have a future project Epi EB3 that I want to strip back to its natural mahogany(?) It of course has a black-faced headstock with mother-pearl style inlay of the Epiphone name - I would like to keep the name. Looking for pros and cons of the different methods - I thought I could take off all the ha...

Re: Strings feel tight?

Don't pass up tinkering a little with saddle height and possibly nut depth - the strings may suit a slightly lower action better. If your bass also has through-body holes, apparently the tension-feel of the strings gets a bit looser if strung through-body, as there is now more string to respond to t...

Re: WTB: Fender TF Fretless or Maton JB4 Fretless

While theres some interest, here's my lined fretless natural sporting Rotosound 65-115 tapes, set ultra low. Chrome flats set that low turned the mwah into a roar! - so tapes got that tamed, but then I had line all the cavities with copper foil to get rid of the noise. http://i64.tinypic.com/2v8pzzr...

Re: Solid state amps - done and dusted? or still in the game?

just going to have to let my ears decide

Yes! Thanks for the footnote! :)
It's not as important to know why something is the way it is, but that there are 'areas' in the sound to be aware of, to make sure it is something you are ok with.

Re: Solid state amps - done and dusted? or still in the game?

cleanest, most accurate amp There's a lot in this (- and still more in the cab as you say) My tech side wants to list the factors in an amp: - Frequency response (most obvious), but is really "power-bandwidth", which decreases frequency range as amplitude increases - Slew rate - the speed...

Re: FS: Fender Super Bassman 300

I didn't search for specs, but if the attenuator can dissipate 100W, then theoretically it can be used with a 200W rig going flat out, as it will take 50% of that power. Given it is a passive device, its a bit murky to predict what it will do with larger amps and different impedances. Worst case may...
