Re: slashin_velvet's 1st full build

Love the camphor laurel top  Thanks. The stuff is a dream to work with from a scent perspective, and actually carves out really well. I've ditched the idea of a veneer top because I like it how it is at the moment. Thanks for the offer acebass. If I get really sick of working by hand, I'll ge...

Re: slashin_velvet's 1st full build

Its definitely easier to cut the laminates *close* to size with a template before gluing them together. Bear in mind that the wood will move during the clamping process so you have to make it slightly bigger than the final size. you might also have to joint the fretboard face again after gluing if ...

Re: slashin_velvet's 1st full build

QLD Maple is fairly soft for a hardwood. I don't think you'd want to do a one piece neck out of that for a 5 string. I'd suggest resawing and making a multi-laminated neck with the boards glued on the quarter side. Depending on how long your blank is you might be able to get 2 pieces with an angled...

Re: Is this repairable?

Can I ask: what is it, how much was it, which state is it located. I might be interested in refinishing it myself if the deal is suitable enough - been looking at getting an MTD for a while.

Re: Is this repairable?

Take all the electronics and hardware off. Completely sand back and refinish with an oil or lacquer.

slashin_velvet's 1st full build

Shaking my head in disbelief that I'm even trying to give this a go. Much like many people buy a gym membership to force them to get fit, I've sunk enough money into building a bass guitar that I have to see it through. I don't have any excuses so here goes. What I'm planning: Type: - 5 string - Sca...

Re: I desperately need help with technique and don't know where to begin

I need practical exercises that I can do to help improve my technique. I have limited time available to me, amongst band commitments, family commitments, and work commitments, so I can't just sit down and practice for 4 hours a day or anything. Therefore, I want to focus on improving my technique f...
