Re: Band PA?

With our band we all chipped in using gig money to buy our small PA. As we’ve been more or less gigging weekly for almost 2 years now it’s been a great investment as most our gigs have been at venues with no PA. As a jazz/funk/soul band we are generally are playing at restaurants, cafes and wedding...

Re: TO ALL WORKING BASSISTS

I think like a lot of industries, the musician industry will continue to be disrupted. I think you're holding onto a dream that you will be treated well and not exploited. This kinda casualisation of work with few protections or worse no pay (internships) are become so everyday across the board that...

Re: FIFA World Cup 2018

Mbappé (French player) did get a yellow for an Oscar-worthy performance. Saw that. Deserved it. France v Belgium the winner of this game will win the cup Yeah I tend to agree, but this Cup has shown all of us, that favouritism counts for nought. I think this cup has shown us that whilst the gap bet...

I've entered the man cave! The good Dr makes some interesting points. However, his solutions seems to be that we should embrace his world of antagonisms and hyper-competition because it is already ingrained in our evolutionary pathway... he reminds me of Major Kong ... yee haw Dr Peterson https://yo...

Re: are nut slot hieights misunderstood?

Yeah most factory stuff is on the high side, and with low and mid-priced stuff, the angles are also often a bit dodgy. But yeah, they have to put the guitar on the wall in a shop and have it play ok with all sorts of players. Especially all those guys that pick it up and slap the crap out of it in ...

Re: are nut slot hieights misunderstood?

I recall seeing a youtube tutorial by a well respected luthier who thought the same thing about nut hight and most factory produced basses. His tip was to press the second fret, and look at the space between the bottom of the string and the first fret. It should have just a tiny amount of space, ju...

Re: are nut slot hieights misunderstood?

One trick that I have used very successfully is a half pencil. You need a sharp pencil that is cut in half lengthwise. Lay it down over the frets (with the cut face down and strings off). You will be able to leave a thin pencil mark across the nut at the height of the frets. It will curve to match ...

Re: are nut slot hieights misunderstood?

Ok so it is just fear factor? I just took my uke into the shop to ask the tech to file it down... so much better, was fighting that high nut action. It now intonates much better. Surely there must be a way to do this without the guess and check? Sadly, every bass in the shop is factory set. These da...

are nut slot hieights misunderstood?

I have found that all nut height settings on factory basses are way too high. However, even techs are pretty conservative with adjusting the slot heights down. I have in my mind the that the lower the better for intonation, easier to play. I know there is such a thing as a zero fret, which suggests ...

Finished or unfinished maple? If it's finished, you're not going to get a lot of mileage out of conditioning it.

Re: Cleaning Maple Fretboard

Ok time for a bump of this zombie thread, because it's also time to get serious about cleaning my SR5 maple fretboard. It's been getting a lot of action lately. Looking through these posts, I can see a vote for white spirits to clean (when Rob speaks I listen), probably thinking just a cloth here(?)...

WTB Semi acoustic bass or EUB

Hi folks, I am on the hunt for a f-hole designed bass, for example, like the hofner verythin or the epiphone zenith, fretted or fretless. I'm open to all and any brand as long as it has that jazz vibe happening. I also have my bb1025x in the classies if people are interested in trading to a 5er. I d...
