Playing less notes on purpose. Ie. "Less is more". Miles Davis once famously said...
It's not the notes you play, it's the notes you don't play.

Re: Talk to me about Double Bass

Thanks for the advice fellaz I'm getting there, straining mainly just when I'm trying to play octave's a lot for extended periods with a high action and high tension. Once I get a proper setup (strings incoming) I'm sure things will settle down a bit. I'm still 'feeling out' a new instrument (to me...

This pedal is worth looking into as well. Billy Sheehan regularly does what you're trying to do...

Re: Talk to me about Double Bass

Bridge profile should be the same. It's just about action. Arco favours a slightly higher action than pizz usually.

P.s. you shouldn't be getting wrist strain with the bow. What sort is it? German or French?

Re: New P.A. What's hot what's not?

We use a DL1608 at church. Because we hire a hall, we're loading in and out every week. As for getting used to it, I think there's a learning curve, but there are literally so many cool things going on with it, it's hard to pass up. One thing to be aware of is the need for a LAN is you want to use i...

Re: Guitar sound with pedals

I think I can see what you're trying to do here. I tried a similar thing with my Zoom B3 and to be honest, it just didn't work. What I have found works is a little OD and playing your bass line up an octave (ie. instead of low on the E/A strings). In my new band I'm sort of doing what you're suggest...

Re: Help Please - how to sell antique double bass

Not to be captain obvious, but the big challenge is specialized instruments and a small population. Depending on the instrument, you might have some interest from interstate or overseas. Ken Smith in the USA has a website and keen interest in lots of upright basses... http://www.smithbassforums.com/...

Re: New studio build

Greg, the room is against an outer wall... but that's 95% of rooms in any house. We're not super loud, but I've regularly cranked a 6x10" in there and my neighbours have regularly told me they didn't even know I was playing. Same for the large meeting room we have. We've had a number of pretty loud ...

Re: Short scale bass ideas?

Hi guys, I'll weight in, not that much more can be said. I started on a short scale bass back in the 70's and then played a Fender VI (See the first 2 Reels albums), such a shitty bass, lol. Later I progressed to long scale and now also play upright. Most of the shorter basses, as well as being che...

Re: Talk to me about Double Bass

We'll have to talk optimal Anima string action/heights :hmm How high do you like 'em slowlearner? I wanted to lower with mine at one stage, but I didn't because they really benefit from medium action. If you go low, you've have issues with them rattling on the board. Remember, they're a large diame...
