Re: Sneaky's random builds log

LOL, I have to say, I think for B strings, you loose all the advantages of multiscale one you go under about 32-33" on the lowest string. If you're suggesting a 5 string with a high C, then I could see a 31-29" would work well. You are almost in bassVI territory then though.

I was going to say with the body shape like that multi scale would look great, and I’ve never seen a multi scale shorty bass so there’s your unconventional quota for the build too.
My 6 string is 31-33". That short enough for you? :)

So, the good news is, the stain has stopped wiping off. The bad new is... actually, there's no bad news. :D Some pics of the body before I put another coat on today... https://i.imgur.com/K3INI8V.jpg And a pic with the neck and some shellite to show the grain on the board... https://i.imgur.com/uB2I...

Impressive stuff. He's not the norm though is he. Most kids that age are a pain because they won't practice.

Re: Let's hear your band.

New band, PBT. Here's a live track from last night's rehearsal.

First time we've ever played the song together. Probably the first time I've ever played the whole song.

Re: Build #12 - 6 string fretless (warning; crazy content)

Yeah, until I can find a way to spray waterbased lacquer that doesn't make a huge mess, I'll be stuck with this dilemma. The bass is end up looking a little patina-ed and grungy, but I can deal with that.

Re: Build #12 - 6 string fretless (warning; crazy content)

I've done 3 coats on the bass now. It looks pretty black, although I've noticed the same thing happening over and over. That is, as I wipe on the oil/poly, it wipes off some of the stain. In most places that's no great issue, but the headstock isn't as black as it was. Again, I'm not super stress ab...

Re: Build #12 - 6 string fretless (warning; crazy content)

Put the final coats of stain on and finally decided on a the finish for the body and headstock today. Was going to buy tru-oil, but at $15 for a thimble full, I decided to make my own again. Mind you, this lot cost me $22. So, all paint seems to be expensive these day. I'll be trying for a slightly ...

Put a coat of tru-oil on the scrap headstock today. HEAPS better than the danish oil. :)

Knocking off the grain ends on the body and headstock at the moment. Then it'll be ready for oiling... or whatever.

Re: Build #12 - 6 string fretless (warning; crazy content)

Did quick test on my scrap headstock last night with some danish oil over the top of the black stain. Hmm. Hated it. It's so dull it doesn't even looked oiled. Fail. Back to tru-oil or similar.

Re: Steve Hunter Interview!

What a monster player he is, but so approachable. In the early 90s I saw him play "Waltzing Matilda" solo at AIM in Sydney. Couldn't believe what I was hearing. Thanks for another great interview. :)

you won't be able to unsee this folks

18 million horn players, the only cool piccolo in the world and some poor unfortunate sound tech up the back trying to balance it all out and prevent the power amps from melting.

Re: Build #12 - 6 string fretless (warning; crazy content)

What finish? Hmmm... either wipe on poly or maybe even Danish oil I hate the dullness of it on most things, but it might suit this well. Finally got back to it today for a bit. I need to cut the nut slot. Having been putting it off. Was worried about how I would hold a guide straight. Then this morn...
