DB slap or Electric Bass slap? For EB basics, +1 for David. He's very patient and diplomatic by nature. I first learned the Stu Hamm method and felt it too rigid. Then the Abe Laboriel method - strike thru the string, half pluck/half slap. Gave up as it didn't feel right. Years later I copied my mat...

HPF is excellent for banishing the mud.

Do you have an EQ pedal? A parametric or semi-parametric EQ would work wonders for this. Empress ParaEQ tops my list of suggestions to try out.
